HEBE Project 2018-2020
Empowering factors and limiters of youth empowerment identification: analysis of speeches and practices of educators
Investing in young people is investing in future. The European strategy for youth attaches relevance to the policies design and intervention strategies based on concrete evidence, experience and knowledge about the situation of young people, their well-being, their quality of life and their opportunities to take an active part in society.
In a context of economic austerity, the situation of youth requires special attention, if we want them to become full citizens. This has led to the emergence of more and more projects led by educators who base their intervention on the youth empowerment, interventions that have not been analyzed scientifically in depth.
This research project aims to provide knowledge and guidance on this issue. It is proposed to identify those aspects that allow the youth empowerment to be possible, involving educators who implement socio-educational projects.
The objective is to identify the empowering and limiting factors of youth empowerment through the analysis of educators speeches and practices.
The study subjects are educators, understood as the educational intervention professionals who work with young people: teachers, social educators, pedagogues, street educators, sociocultural animators).
Specifically educators from 4 fields:
- formal education,
- occupational training,
- specialized education and
- socio-cultural animation and leisure.
The research is structured around four action lines:
The first one works with educators stories based on the field newspapers and audiovisual stories analysis made by 8 professionals (2 per field of study and with implication in programs that explicitly indicate the will to empower young people).
The second line will be an online questionnaire to an intentional sample of educators at a state level in each of the study areas.
The third one focuses on the design, validation and application of a rubric of youth empowerment indicators that allows the projects evaluation that pursue the youth empowerment. The application will be carried out in 6 socio-educational projects aimed at youth empowerment.
The fourth and last line focuses on the results triangulation of the preceding action lines and on the realization of a colloquium on the determining factors of youth empowerment. To do this, the educators involved in the project and 8 selected experts will be called.
All products will be disseminated through the HEBE Project website and the audiovisual material from the pieces of the educators will be incorporated into the HEBE website, as a tool for analysis and reflection.
The result should serve to generate knowledge among educators and to identify the elements that best meet the needs of youth empowerment. In addition, it must contribute to the socio-educational processes and practices development, and also to the decision-making in different areas of public policies.
